An overview of why we need professional registration for all pre-hospital care:

Why we need the UKREMT

It is well known and well established in the UK that Paramedics, Nurses and Doctors have a very good registration schemes that keep the public safe, along with other bodies such as the college of paramedics which lead the field globally in paramedic education.

Currently in the UK not all staff working within pre-hospital emergency medicine are registered (currently only Paramedics, Doctors and Nurses are registered) or audited, add to that the very wide range of courses and skill sets it is difficult for those in the industry to know where one particular individual sits as course's can vary considerably and then because their titles such as "Technician" and "EMT" are not protected the variation of skills a technician or EMT has is very wide.

Therefore, it is almost impossible for the public to understand the various titles because of the described differences and the public assume (especially in the event industry) every ambulance is the same and if dressed in green you're a "paramedic".

Emergency Medical Technicians are an important resource as part of ambulance crews. They are highly trained and skilled in their role. They should be recognised as such, and should be registered the same as Paramedics and other healthcare providers. Recent incidents have highlighted the need for registration, not only to improve the status of an EMT but to reassure the public that they can trust the role of an EMT and when dealing with patients in ambulance situations.

The UKREMT would like to see the government undertake this role and ensure all practising IHCD Technicians and AAP's are registered with the HCPC but though it has had good support we believe that it is still a long way off being a reality.

The UKREMT is a non-statutory registration scheme that will not only register APP's and IHCD Ambulance Technician's but ALL professional pre-hospital care providers, from first in scene responders to technicians to fall in line with other registered providers such as paramedics. All members will be graded in line with the current pre-hospital emergency medicine (PHEM) skills framework in the UK as laid down by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Faculty of Pre Hospital Care (FPHC).

UKREMT is a not-for-profit, non-statutory organisation that is run by volunteers and with two AIM's.

* To register all professional that provide care to pre-hospital patients

* To campaign for the protection of titles such as EMT, CMT, ECA, CFR, IAP & AAP

Employers, Prospective Employers, Clients and the Public can check the registration list to ensure the medical team they have booked or are looking to employ have the correct skill set based on an approved PHEC skills framework. All full registrant members on the UKREMT register will be 100% audited.

Registration for ALL pre-hospital care practitioners is long overdue and the UKREMT can address this with the support of those in the industry , employers, the public and event organisers. As well as those organisations that run courses and manage the UK existing registers for healthcare professionals (HCPC, RCSEd, BMC, NMC, COP).
